Garsington
Spencer executed many paintings while staying in Garsington from c. 1923-6, and their titles have often become confused. However, this painting can be securely identified as Garsington by the related oil study (c. 1924, private collection) which is inscribed ‘G. SPENCER/ STUDY FOR/ GARSINGTON’. It is almost certainly therefore the painting of that name exhibited at the Goupil Gallery Summer Exhibition 1924 (163). It was priced at £36.15, at the upper end of his price range for landscape paintings in the 1920s.
