Ploughed Land, Garsington (alt. title: Mr Clinkard's Field; The Ploughed Field)
According to the catalogue of Reading 1964, this painting was also known as ‘Mr Clinkard’s Field’. It is one of the earliest of the paintings Spencer made while lodging in the village of Garsington, Oxfordshire from c. 1923-6, where he enjoyed the society and patronage of Sir Philip and Lady Ottoline Morrell of Garsington Manor. Spencer’s fascination with farm machinery is reflected in the prominent foreground positioning of the plough.
