Study for Garsington
This is a preparatory study for the slightly larger oil painting, Garsington (1924, private collection). It is painted on paper, with additional sheets adjoined to the left, top, and right of the central sheet; Spencer evidently decided to enlarge the composition while working on it. The present work was owned by Sir Philip and Lady Ottoline Morrell, and can be seen over the mantelpiece at Garsington Manor in a 1926 photograph, which also includes Spencer himself (NPG Ax142414).
