Near Caversham


Caversham is on the outskirts of Reading, Berkshire. This painting is one of a group of local landscapes painted in 1921-2 while Spencer was living in Caversham near Reading. He was lodging with Mabel and Tom Nash, a contemporary of Stanley Spencer at the Slade School of Art. It was during this time that Spencer began to plan his first solo exhibition, held at the Goupil Gallery in 1923, at which this work was exhibited.
