A memory of Whit'all
Painted considerably later than most of Spencer's farmyard scenes, it reprises many motifs of his paintings of the 1920s and 1930s: a flock of birds alighting on an undulating roof; accurately-depicted farm machinery; ebullient cows; blank-faced farm workers. Whit'all may be Whittle, home of Spencer's friends Vera and Austin Lane Poole.
