Basildon Park from the West
This view of Basildon Park, home of Lord and Lady Iliffe, is unusual in Spencer's oeuvre. Not only does it depict a Palladian mansion rather than a farm or cottage, but Spencer has framed a classic view of the front, rather than adopting his usual 'back garden' perspective. Basildon Park is close to Spencer's home village of Upper Basildon, and the painting was commissioned by Lord Iliffe.
