Returning from School
This painting has been recently identified as Returning from School, exhibited at the Goupil Gallery in 1929 (25). The girl's pinafore dress and the book in the boy's hand suggest the subject. The children are being driven in a large farm wagon, one of Spencer's favourite subjects. The figures, particularly the turned-away heads, are reminiscent in those of A Cotswold Farm (1930-1, Tate). A smaller oil study for this painting is in a private collection.
