Goodnight, Mr Bartlett!
This painting was begun in 1937, from which year there is a signed and dated pencil study. It was finished or reworked in 1952, and not exhibited until 1958. It was previously thought that there were two versions of this painting, one from 1937 and one from 1952, but they are now believed to be the same work. It was bequeathed to the Art Gallery of South Australia by Christine Macgregor, the widow of Duncan Macgregor, a friend of Spencer's from his time painting murals at Balliol College, Oxford in 1934-6.
