The palette of soft pinks, browns and greys is one that Spencer utilised for many of his paintings in the 1930s. Other examples include Meadow Landscape (c. 1936-9, private collection), The artist's garden, Burden's Farmhouse (c. 1932-6, private collection), Girl at Garsington (c. 1938, private collection) and Terwick Mill (1932, private collection).
