Little Alps, Provence (alt. title: Mountain Landscape with a Windmill)

The barren, mountainous terrain is rare among Spencer's landscapes, which mostly depict the gentler, lusher topography of the southern English counties. It was painted during a six-week visit to Provence in late 1920. The paint handling is unusually confident for such an early landscape.
