Painted at Boar's Hill, near Oxford, at the home of Spencer's friends Mr & Mrs Heath. Spencer regarded it as 'one of my best. It had an authenticity and authority about it recognizable in certain portraits painted long ago which convince one that they were true likenesses.' (Spencer 1974, p. 86)
