This portrait of Sydney Council is closely related to a second portrait, now or formerly in the collection of the British Council. Spencer was close friends with the Carline family throughout the 1920s, and in 1926 shared lodgings with Sydney Carline at the Plough Inn, Little Milton, Oxfordshire.
