St Remy, Provence
Almost all of Spencer’s works were painted in Britain. This is one of a handful of European subjects, painted during a six-week visit to France in late 1920. Spencer was delighted to discover that it had been purchased from his 1923 solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery by T.E. Lawrence ‘of Arabia’. Soon after, he was commissioned by Lawrence to paint a landscape at his Dorset home, View of Egdon Heath from the Crest of Clouds Hill looking North (c. 1924-5, Clouds Hill, NT).
