The artist's garden, Burden's Farm House

The artist's garden, Burden's Farm House

Spencer rented Burden's Farmhouse each summer from 1932-45. It was largely unmodernised, and the staddlestones in the foreground of this garden landscape indicate its agricultural history. The palette of soft pinks, browns and greys is one that Spencer utilised for many of his paintings in the 1930s. Other examples include Meadow Landscape (c. 1936-9, private collection), Group of Trees, Basildon (c. 1936-9, private collection), Girl at Garsington (c. 1938, private collection) and Terwick Mill (1932, private collection).
