The Stoning of St Stephen, 2nd version


Exhibited at Reading, 1964 (96) when it was in the artist’s possession, but now untraced. Along with Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife (1952, Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, NZ), this was a second version in oils of the subject, based on Spencer’s Ten Commandments lithographs, commissioned by Robert Gathorne-Hardy in 1927 and published in 1934. An earlier version in oils (1938, untraced) was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1939 (15).
