The Terrace Garden (alt. title: The Terrace)

The Terrace Garden (alt. title: The Terrace)

This painting depicts the terrace of the Carline family home at 47 Downshire Hill, Hampstead, where Spencer was a regular guest. Richard Carline had painted the same terrace two years earlier, filled with family and friends, including Gilbert's brother Stanley (c. 1924, Ferens Art Gallery). Gilbert exhibited this painting in at the Goupil Gallery in 1926, but presumably continued to work on it afterward, as it is signed and dated 1927.
