Wimborne, from The Crown
Painted while Spencer was lodging at Witchampton, a few miles from the Dorset market town of Wimborne Minster. Spencer has rejected a conventional picturesque view of the medieval Minster by filling the foreground with the façade of the modern Boots the Chemist. The view was painted from the second floor of The Crown Hotel, since demolished. This painting is presently untraced, and illustrated from a photograph in the Gilbert Spencer archive.
