This pencil portrait of Gilbert's friend and fellow artist, Hilda Carline, was drawn shortly after her marriage to Gilbert's brother Stanley Spencer. Gilbert joined the newlyweds on their honeymood in Wangford, Suffolk, where the three artists painted landscapes and drew pencil portraits of each other.
