One of a set of illustrations for In Country Places by Eiluned Lewis, published by Country Life in 1951. As described in the inscription, the figure in the pollarded tree recurred, with some alterations, in Spencer's mural 'The Scholar Gypsy', painted in 1954-6 but now covered over.
