Dorset Downs
Gilbert Spencer and his brother Stanley spent part of the summer of 1920 in the village of Durweston, Dorset, visiting his friend and fellow artist Henry Lamb who lived in nearby Stourpaine. It was here that he fully developed his skills as a landscape painter, beginning with relatively simple compositions such as this sweeping, open panorama. Gilbert returned over several successive summers throughout the 1920s.
