Landscape with house, possibly Tree Cottage

Landscape with house, possibly Tree Cottage

This landscape is one of Spencer's typical 'back garden' views, and is probably of Tree Cottage, Upper Basildon, the artist's home from 1936 to 1970. It may be one of the untraced landscapes exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1939, possibly Tree Cottage (22). Along with this landscape, two other paintings from the same exhibition, The Making of the Golden Calf and Noah Summoning the Beasts, were acquired by Christine and Duncan MacGregor, with whom Spencer had become friendly while painting his mural scheme at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1975, Christine bequeathed five paintings by Spencer to the Art Gallery of South Australia.
