Portrait of Joyce Peters no. 2
This is one of two portraits of Spencer's friend, ballet dancer Joyce Peters, in whom he had a romantic interest. He wrote to Dick Carline, 'I did a small study of her, not much good & a portrait which was all over the shop' (Gough 2024, p. 148). Both were painted around the same time, and were exhibited at the Goupil Gallery in 1929, titled no. 1 and no. 2; this is probably no. 2, the study.
