The solicitor Wilfrid Evill was an important patron of 20th century artists, including Gilbert and Stanley Spencer. The pictures on the wall behind him in this portrait are by Gilbert Spencer, John Nash, G. Bissel and Spencer Gore. The letter on Wilfrid Evill's lap is headed 'Chapel St, Preston' and dated Dec 11 1931.
