The Bandsman on Gold Hill alt. title Gold Hill

The Bandsman on Gold Hill alt. title Gold Hill

The composition of this untraced painting is known from a surviving preparatory sketch in pencil and watercolour, squared for transfer (pictured here). Although Gold Hill is a famously steep and picturesque street in Shaftesbury, Dorset, Spencer has relegated it to the backdrop. Instead, the figure of the bandsman dominates the composition, especially the bold stripe of his trousers, the intricate frogging of his jacket, and the gleaming vortex of his tuba.
