The Chest of Drawers
Spencer only rarely painted domestic interiors, but enjoyed doing so. He recounted in his Memoirs that this painting was ‘illustrated in one of London’s society weeklies with the caption "An exercise in the sordid". Yet I loved painting it, and hoped my landlady who took so much trouble over me, would not see it’ (Spencer 1974, p. 119). It was purchased by the artist Mark Gertler, a sometime friend of Spencer’s, who was also represented by the Goupil Gallery.
