The Harbour, Canna
In 1938, Gaelic scholar John Lorne Campbell and his wife and professional collaborator Margaret (Meg) Fay Shaw bought the island of Canna, in the Scottish Hebrides. They welcomed many artists and writers to the island, which became a hub in Scotland's mid-century cultural renaissance. Gilbert and Ursula Spencer were friends with the Campbells from their time at Balliol College, Oxford, and spent an idyllic holiday on Canna in 1947, with fellow artist Tirzah Garwood and her sons John and James Ravilious. The visits inspired Spencer's large painting Hebridean Memory (c. 1949-51, private collection).
