The Master Farmer
The subject of this painting, ‘Mr Barton in the Fields’ was introduced to Spencer by Vera Lane Poole as a potential subject on account of his ‘good head’. Spencer made a drawing for Vera, and at the farmer’s request, this copy for him, for which he thanked the artist with a gift of eggs and port poured into a cow’s horn made from one of his own cows.
